Meeting for redistribution of colleges under NU today
A crucial meeting of the high-powered committee for redistribution of colleges under the National University (NU) will be held at the University Grants Commission (UGC) today.
The committee has prepared some alternative proposals for NU but two main proposals are likely to be discussed in the meeting, said committee sources, adding that any of the two proposals will be finalised in the meeting.
The proposal to decentralise the NU by making six regional centres and attach the affiliated colleges under the respective centres has been given the priority, added the sources.
According to the proposal, the NU would have six regional centres with the main one at Gazipur. It will prepare the curriculum and syllabus while the regional centres would implement those.
"The main centre would monitor the regional centres," said another source, adding that the Qudrat-e-Khuda Education Commission also recommended such a proposal in its report.
The other proposal attaches the NU-affiliated colleges to divisional public universities.
There would be some difficulties in implementing this proposal as the condition and infrastructure of some public universities is not good enough to maintain the NU-affiliated colleges, added the source.
Though both the proposals have pros and cons but it would be difficult to bring the affiliated colleges under the public universities.
The education ministry formed the high-powered 11-member committee with UGC Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam as the convener on March 24 to redistribute 1800 graduate and postgraduate colleges.
The other members of the committee include vice chancellors of different public universities, joint secretary (university) of the ministry and the UGC secretary.
The committee has already held three meetings since its formation and today's meeting is the last one to send its decision to the ministry.
