Zia Orphanage Trust Case

SC upholds HC bail to Khaleda

The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday upheld a High Court (HC) order granting bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust Fund Embezzlement Case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim passed the order rejecting a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the ACC against the HC order.
The lawyers concerned said the apex court rejected the ACC's petition considering that it was not submitted for hearing as she is already free on bail.
ACC's Deputy Assistant Director Harun-ur-Rashid filed the case with Ramna Police Station against Khaleda, her son Tarique Rahman and five others on July 3 of last year.
Following a petition filed by Khaleda, the HC on August 26 of last year, first granted a four-month bail to Khaleda in the case.
Then the court extended the order several times and lastly on July 7 this year it extended the bail order for six months.
Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq appeared for Khaleda, while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan argued for ACC.
