Katarina to head Munich Olympics bid
Former double Olympic figure skating champion Katarina Witt will head Munich's bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, it was announced on Thursday.
"I will do everything I can so that the International Olympic Committee can only award the Games to Munich," said Witt, a gold medallist at the 1984 Sarajevo and 1988 Calgary Games.
The bid committee will also feature former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as well as World Cup football legend Franz Beckenbauer.
Munich, which staged the 1972 Summer Olympics, will face competition for the 2018 Games from Pyeongchang in South Korea and the French town of Annecy.
The IOC will make its decision in July 2011.
