Construction of flyover, marine drive this year

Hopes CCC mayor

Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury said construction of a flyover and marine drive will start this year if the government approves the projects and allocate funds.
He said the flyover from Airport to Dewanhat footbridge at a cost of Tk 15,000 crore and the marine drive way from Sadarghat to Kalurghat at a cost of Tk 1,000 crore will be constructed to ease traffic jam in the port city.
He was addressing a post budget press conference at the CCC conference room.
Mohiuddin said CCC has been neglected for long and this the time to go forward as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised to do everything needed for the development of Chittagong.
He said the city corporation received Tk 24 crore from the present government for development and hope that it will also get money for the projects.
He said a team of experts has already visited Thailand to gather knowledge on constructing flyovers and a feasibility study has been carried out to start construction.
He sought cooperation of all agencies concerned including Public Works Department, Chittagong Development Authority and Chittagong Port Authority in this regard.
Emphasising the need for setting up sluice gates in the mouths of canals, he said they are widening and dredging the canals to get rid of the waterlogging and a task force has been formed to monitor the activities.
Prof Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam, CCC Chief Executive Officer Imtiaz Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Medical Officer Selim Akhter Chowdhury and ward councillors were present at the press conference.
CCC on Sunday announced an ambitious budget of Tk 3127,50,53,000 for the fiscal year 2009-2010 giving special emphasis on building the flyover and marine drive.
