2 more killed in 'shootouts'
An alleged criminal was killed and two policemen were injured in a shootout between the law enforcers and his accomplices near the National Botanical Garden in the capital early yesterday.
In a separate incident, also yesterday, an alleged robber was killed in a shootout between his accomplices and members of the Rapid Action battalion (Rab) at Shibpur in Narayanganj.
In the incident at the botanical garden, the deceased was identified as Kalu, 29, son of late Ashraf Ali of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur.
He was an active member of Shahdat gang in Mirpur area, police said, adding that ringleader Shahdat went into hiding in a neighbouring country a few years back.
Injured Sub-inspector (SI) Sazedur Rahman and a constable of Shah Ali police station were taken to Rajarbagh Police Hospital where they were undergoing treatment, police said.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Kalu from Beribadh Balurmath area around 11:00pm Sunday, said Officer-in-charge (OC) of Shah Ali police station Mohammad Zakir Hossain Mollah.
According to his confessional statement, police raided a cluster of bamboo near the Botanical garden where accomplices of Kalu gathered to commit a crime, the OC said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, his accomplices opened fire at police prompting them to fire back.
The OC further said police found Kalu with bullet injury after the shootout while his accomplices escaped the scene. Kalu was accused in around seven cases with Mirpur Police station, he said.
Police rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered two machetes, two knives and a bullet from the spot.
OC Mollah said, “The members of Shahdat Bahini work in different groups. Some of them issue threats, some collect extorted money while some others ensure security of gang members and hand over the extorted money to Shahdat.”
He said Kalu had been a toll collector of the gang in Mirpur and Shah Ali areas.
Akbar Hossain Babu, brother of Kalu, told reporters at the DMC morgue that a police team led by SI Jalil and SI Sajedur picked up Kalu from a tea stall near his residence at Dakkhin Bisil in the capital Sunday evening.
His younger brother Delwar along with locals went to the police station where the police informed them that Kalu was accused in a case under speedy trial tribunal act, Babu added.
Delwar, talking to The Daily Star, said that as the police took Kalu out of the police station around 10:00pm, he asked Delwar to wait for him at the station as the police would bring him back a few hours later.
In the shootout at Narayangnaj, a group of robbers attacked a microbus carrying Rab-11 team in plain clothes from Shibpur. Mongal and his gang intercepted the microbus at around 3:00am at Ghoshirdia area in the upazila.
A gunfight ensued between the Rab team and the robbers lasting for almost 40 minutes. Most of the robbers fled when police rushed to the spot. Police discovered the body of a robber left on the spot and rushed him to Narsingdi sadar hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Locals identified the dead man as Mongal, leader of Mongal Bahini. Mongal ,30, was convicted in a murder case and an accused in other several cases including three murder cases with Shibpur and Raipura police stations in the district.
Rab recovered a revolver loaded with bullets and three machetes from the spot.
Meanwhile, a team of Rab-10 shot two criminals, injuring both, in separate incidents at Shanirakhra and Jatrabari area in the capital on Sunday night.
