I'll fight for post of party secy general
BNP Vice President Nazmul Huda yesterday said chairperson and secretary general of the party should be elected through council, but chairman should have the right to pick all the members of the standing committee.
“There will be enthusiasm among the party leaders and workers during the council and the party chairman and secretary general should be elected by the councillors which would be a democratic practice,” Huda said.
Talking to The Daily Star last evening, he also said chairperson should fill up the vacant posts of the embattled national standing committee immediately on temporary basis, adding that she [chairperson] can announce a full-fledged committee later.
At least six out of 15 posts of standing committee, highest policymaking body of the party, are now lying vacant.
According to the party constitution, chairman will be elected for two years through direct voting of members of the national council. The constitution empowers the chairman to appoint officials and members of the national executive committee, including secretary general.
The former minister said he is very much interested to be the secretary general. “It should be settled through council and, of course, I will fight for it as I think I will be able to make the party strong across the country.”
“I am competent for the post of secretary general as I did not change the party and I was at the forefront of all democratic movements.”
Asked about the ongoing intra-party conflict, Huda, who was convicted on charge of corruption, said grouping and lobbying is a common democratic practice in a big political party like BNP and it's not a problem at all.
