Maya sent to jail on surrender

Former state minister for shipping and Awami League (AL) leader Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Munshiganj district unit AL president Mohammad Mohiuddin were sent to jail after they surrendered before a Dhaka court yesterday and sought bail in two separate graft cases.
Another Dhaka court sent former AL lawmaker Alhaj Mockbul Hossain's son Masudur Rahman to jail on his surrender in connection with a graft case.
Judge (in-charge) Mozammel Hossain of the Special Court-5 passed the order rejecting the bail of both Maya and Mohiuddin when the two appeared before the court.
Moving the bail petitions, their lawyers told the court that their clients were earlier sentenced to different terms in jail in absentia and later had appeared before the High Court (HC) seeking bail.
But the HC, without granting them bails, had instructed them to surrender before trial courts.
Showing respect towards court orders, their clients surrendered and sought bail, as they would file appeals with higher court against the convictions.
After hearing both sides, the judge rejected the bail petitions and ordered that they be sent to jail. The court asked jail authorities to provide them with first class division in jail.
Meanwhile, a large number of their AL leaders and activists gathered on the court premises and chanted slogans demanding the release of their leaders and withdrawal of the cases against them.
CASE AGAINST MAYA
On February 14 last year, Judge Ashraf Hossain of the Special Court-5 sentenced Maya to 13 years' imprisonment for amassing wealth illegally and concealing wealth information from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The court also fined the AL leader Tk 5 crore and ordered confiscation of about Tk 6 crore of his ill-gotten wealth.
The case against Maya and six others was filed with Sutrapur Police Station on June 13, 2007.
CASE AGAINST MOHIUDDIN
On July 10 last year, the same court sentenced Mohiuddin to 11 years' imprisonment for amassing wealth worth Tk 3.73 crore illegally and concealing information from the ACC.
He was fined Tk 10 lakh in default of which he would have to serve another year in jail. The court ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate the former MP's ill-gotten wealth.
The case against Mohiuddin was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station on January 2 last year. Mohiuddin was convicted for eight years' imprisonment on August 7 last year in a tax evasion.
CASE AGAINST MASUD
Judge Mohammad Sirajul Islam of the Special Court-7 sentenced Masud to 13 years' imprisonment in absentia in a case filed for amassing wealth through illegal means and concealing wealth information from the ACC.
Masud was also fined Tk 10 lakh in default of which he would have to serve another year in jail. The court ordered confiscation of Masudur's property worth Tk 6.21 crore amassed through illegal means.
The case against Masudur Rahman was filed with Ramna thana on November 30, 2007.
