RMG exporters ask for safety

Garment manufacturers have demanded that the government ensure security for them from mugging, looting, snatching, extortion and even death threats they are now facing frequently.
"We want security for the garment factory owners and exemplary punishment to the criminals immediately as the sector is hostage to some anti-social elements," said Abdus Salam Murshedy, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA)at a press conference yesterday.
A few unknown criminals shot down Mubarak Hossain, father-in-law of Delwar Hossain, owner of Tuba Fashion, in the former assistant superintendents of police (ASP) Abdur Rashid and Munshi Atiqur Rahman.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge ANM Bashir Ullah passed the order after they appeared before the court as per the High Court (HC) direction.
Earlier on April 13, the three sought anticipatory bail from the HC.
But HC asked them to appear before the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court within eight weeks.
In the meantime, law enforcement agencies were directed not to arrest or harass them during the period.
CID's ASP Fazlul Kabir, the present IO, filed the case on March 29 with Paltan Police Station against the former CID officials on charge of destroying evidences and forcing people into making confessional statements.
In complaint, Kabir said the former CID officials implicated a number of innocent people in the case filed in connection with the grenade attack on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004, to hide facts and to let the actual criminals get away.
