Five including a Ugandan held with Yaba tablets
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday arrested four Yaba traders including two women with 425 tablets and a Ugandan national, but narrowly failed to hold a key person who Rab believes smuggles the drugs into Bangladesh.
Meantime, the Task Force for Interrogation (TFI) has started grilling six youths of well-off families held with 16 Yaba tablets, 24 pornography CDs and two luxurious vehicles on October 18 about details of people running the illegal business in the posh areas, Rab officials said.
A Rab-1 team posing as buyers went to Badda in the city and captured Yaba carrier Anisur Rahman, 25, with 300 tablets.
Squeezing information out of him, Rab picked up Yaba trader Al Amin, 30, and carriers Baby, 20, and Prema, 25, from a nearby house of his employer.
"Waliur Rahman, who visits different countries frequently and smuggled Yaba into Bangladesh, fled minutes before our raid," said Maj Saiful Islam who led the operation at 12:45am.
He said Waliur frequently visits Nepal, India, China and the UAE.
During a search at Waliur's rented house the elite force members seized 125 Yaba tablets, three credit cards, a passport and Tk 4,000 fake currency.
Anisur and Prema admitted to reporters at Rab-1 office in Uttara that they just work as carriers, while Al Amin said he is a Yaba addict.
Baby who claims to be third among Waliur's three wives said she does not know anything about drugs trade. However, Rab officials said Baby and Al Amin are Yaba dealers.
With the latest arrests, Rab and Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) have so far arrested 16 people who include private university students and a music video model since October 18.
Members of different intelligence agencies started quizzing the six youths at the TFI yesterday to learn every detail of the drugs business, a top official of Rab said asking not to be named.
Rab sources said the youths are being interrogated carefully as they seemed to be ill.
Dayee Khan Beer alias Chiku, Mushfiqur Rahman Tamal, Sheikh Ahed Shafiq, Salman Rahim Juardar, Altaf Akmal Kollol and Mahmud Al Juberee alias Shanon are now on a three-day remand.
Another team of Rab last night raided a house in Gulshan and held a Ugandan citizen identified as Amin Huda with Yaba tablets and contraband phensidyle.
"We have seized many things including Yaba and phensidyle from the house," Major Sayeed, who was leading the operation, told The Daily Star early today.
The raid was going on as of 1:15am.
