No headway in Jhalakathi PP murder case in 2 yrs
Probe into the murder of Haider Hossain, the public prosecutor in Jhalakathi judges' killing case, is yet to see any headway two years after the incident.
Militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) kingpin Shaikh Abdur Rahman, military commander Sidduqul Islam Bangla Bhai and five of their accomplices were given death sentence in the case for killing senior assistant judges Jagannath Pandey and Sohel Ahmed in Jhalakathi town on November 14 in 2005.
Unidentified criminals shot dead Haider Hossain on April 11 in 2007 when he came out of a mosque in Jhalakathi town after the Esha prayers.
The victim's family alleged that the killers are threatening them over phone to withdraw the case but the criminals are yet to be arrested.
Talking to this correspondent, Haider Hossain 's son Tarique Ibne Haider demanded judicial probe into the incident.
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector Taffajal Hossain, who has recently taken charge as the fourth investigation officer (IO), said he finds it difficult to proceed with the investigation due to lack of witnesses.
Former IO Amir Hossain, also a CID inspector, said JMB activist Murad Hossain of Tutpara in Khulna confessed under Section 164 that Sagir shot down PP Haider Hossain on July 5, 2007.
Later another JMB activist Sagar was arrested in Mymensing, who also confessed to killing PP Haider Hossain under Section 164.
IO Amir Hossain took Sagar under five days' remand on August 16, 2007.
During interrogation, Sagar denied his previous confession. As a result the investigation was hampered.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) Court in Jhalakathi sent Sagar on further three days' police remand on January 16, 2008 but there was no headway in the probe.
Shortly after Haider's murder, a three-member investigation committee headed by the then superintendent of police of Jhalakathi was formed but their report was kept secret 'for the sake of proper investigation'.
