1 shot dead at manpower agent's office
Unidentified criminals sprayed bullets at the office of a recruiting agency in the city's Banani area yesterday that left its one staff killed and another injured.
Following the shooting, the criminals escaped the scene leaving behind a sweetmeat packet which contains a piece of shroud, one bullet and a chit, inscribed with a threatening message against owner of Dhamashi Tours and Travels Ltd Enam Ahmed Chowdhury and his elder brother to pay Tk 5 crore in toll or get ready for death.
The dead was identified as Nazrul Islam, 28, office cook of the agency.
Staffs rushed the injured persons to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the attending doctors declared Nazrul dead at about 11:00 am.
Messenger of the agency Jahirul Islam Zahir who was under treatment at DMCH with bullet wounds told The Daily Star that two young men with the packet tried to enter the office at about 10:00 am while he was staying in its reception room.
"While I tried to resist them, they opened fire at my right hand and then the youths entered the office and our cook Nazrul also received bullets in his back while they again fired at least three shots through the window panes," Zahir said.
While contacted Kader Helal, manager (operation) of the office, said when the criminals launched the gun attack, no officers were present at the office.
OC of Gulshan police station Kamrul Alam Mullah said the recruiting agency earlier did not receive any threat for toll.
In the chit, signed by one Sahadat, was also inscribed a cell number.
A murder case was filed with the police.
