Muggers kill one in city

Muggers killed a trader in the Civil Aviation area near Zia International Airport while seven others sustained injuries in four separate snatching incidents in the city on Monday night and early yesterday.
The dead was identified as Obaidur Rahman, 30.
The injured were identified as Zahid, garment workers Babul Hossain, Shaheen and Barkat and three non-government organisation (NGO) employees Bakul, Ashraf and Miron.
Police and relatives of Obaidur said at around 7:05pm on Monday a gang of three muggers intercepted a CNG-run three-wheeler carrying him in the Civil Aviation area and dragged him to a nearby bush.
Golam Mostofa, relative of Obaidur told The Daily Star that muggers stabbed him indiscriminately as he tried to resist the muggers from snatching Tk 60000 from his possession.
Petrol police rushed him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital at around 9:00pm where he succumbed to his injuries at around 2:00am yesterday.
Mostafa said Obaidur came to his residence at Uttara on Monday morning to buy goods for his business centre at Jessore.
Officer-in-Charge of Airport Police Station Sirajul Islam said police could not be sure whether it was an incident of snatching or an attack over previous enmity.
Obaidur was also a manpower broker, he added.
Meanwhile, Zahid sustained stab injuries when muggers intercepted his rickshaw at Gulshan-1 at around 12:15am and snatched Tk 1500 from his possession.
In another incident, muggers snatched Tk 2300, two mobile phone sets and a wristwatch from garment workers Babul Hossain, Shaheen and Barkat from Badda area at around 11:30pm.
Muggers stabbed them indiscriminately as they tried to protest.
Meanwhile, three NGO employee Bakul, Ashraf and Miron sustained stab injuries as they tried to resist the muggers from snatching Tk 1800 from them at Adabar at around 1:00am.
They were taken to Suhrawardy Hospital, locals said.
