6 outlaws get life for murder

The Speedy Trial Tribunal, Rajshahi, yesterday awarded life imprisonment to six operatives of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) for killing union council chairman Abdus Sobhan Chowdhury in Naogaon.
The convicts are Babu alias Sagor, Akbar-1, Abdus Sabur, Zahidul Islam, Abdul Latif and Chanchal.
Judge ATM Mesbauddoula also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, they are suffer another year in jail.
The court also acquitted four accused, Ibrahim Mondol, Shariful, Akbar-2 and Mahfuzur Rahman Jewel, as charges brought against them were not proved.
Three other accused--Jalal, Shafiqul and Sohel Rana-- were exempted from the case following their death in “shootouts” with the law enforcers.
Abdus Sobhan Chowdhury, chairman of Muniary Union Council and headmaster of Naidighi High School in Atiai upazila of Naogaon district, was hacked to death by the outlaws while returning home at Naidighi from the district headquarters in a passenger bus on August 30, 2002.
Chowdhury's wife Ferdousi Yasmin lodged a murder case with Atrai Police Station and Sub-Inspector Rezaul Islam submitted the charge sheet to the magistrate's court against 13 PBCP men on August 3, 2003.
The case was shifted to the tribunal in July last year and 27 witnesses were cross-examined during the trial.
