Thank you readers, patrons, advertisers
Starting today, our three-part, 200-page 18th Anniversary supplement will be distributed over the next two days along with your daily copy, FREE of any extra charge. The theme for this year is "Time to Turn a Corner" which has been presented in three parts: a) Expectations from the new government; b) Revisiting the caretaker government; and c) Global trends: Adversity or opportunity.
We sincerely believe that time has arrived for us to turn a corner. The return to democracy and representative government, the firm commitment for a politics of change and the massive rejection by our voters of corruption and extremism give Bangladesh a real chance to move forward in the globalised world. The current economic meltdown will no doubt prove a serious challenge yet the fundamentals are still positive enough to make us hopeful. The prime requirement is good governance, to establish which this newspaper will continue to serve its readers with "journalism without fear or favour".
As the supplement proves, your favourite newspaper, The Daily Star, has come a long way. This has only been possible due to the generous support of our readers, patrons and advertisers, who have made us the unquestioned leader of English language journalism in the country. Please accept our grateful and sincere thanks.
Just as we are humbled by the massive support we have received over the last 18 years, so are we emboldened to serve the cause of democracy, good governance and people's right to know with greater determination and professionalism. We pledge our readers and well-wishers to improve the quality and extent of our coverage and opinions even further and serve our country better in the coming days.
