Tribute paid to Dr Zoha
University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam yesterday said Dr Shamsuzzoha's sacrifice exemplifies true patriotism, affection and responsibility towards the country.
Dr Zoha, who glorified the teachers' community, was also a glaring example of the Bangalee spirit during the liberation war, he added.
Prof Nazrul said this as the chief guest at 'Zoha Memorial Lecture' organised by the chemistry department at the senate building marking the martyred teacher's death anniversary with its Chairman Prof Dr Basudev Kumar Das in the chair.
Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Fazlul Bari was present as the special guest at the programme, while Pro-VC Prof Mamnunul Keramat was also present.
Nobonita Bhatacharjo, a student of the chemistry department, read out the life profile of Prof Zoha, a teacher of chemistry and proctor.
On February 18 in 1969, Prof Zoha, a teacher of the chemistry department and proctor of the university, was shot dead by the Pakistani army in front of the RU main gate. His death intensified mass uprising against the then autocratic regime.
On the other hand, RU authorities yesterday observed the day as a 'Teachers' Day' on the campus.
In the morning, the pro-VC and staffs placed wreaths at the grave of Dr Zoha and at his portrait.
Rajshahi University Teachers' Association (Ruta), Progressive Teachers Society (PTS), teachers' and officers' associations, BCL, Rajshahi University Journalists' Association (Ruja) and different student and cultural organisations also offered tributes to the martyred hero.
Black flags were hoisted atop the administrative building, VC's residence, library, department and residential halls.
