4 journos beaten up by students at DU
Students of fine arts faculty at Dhaka University (DU) yesterday beat up four journalists allegedly for humiliating a senior teacher of the faculty.
The injured were Ariful Islam of Dainik Sangram, Jahedul Arman of Dainik Dinkal, Palash Sarker of Jai Jai Din and Abdur Rahim Dipu of Radio ABC. All of them are DU correspondents of the media concerned.
The injured journalists took treatment from the university medical centre.
Sources said the incident occurred when the students of the faculty confined Jahedul and Tarequl at the faculty accusing them of harassing Prof Shishir Bhattacharjee over an interviewing session of first-year honours students.
Being informed other reporters rushed to the spot and got involved in alterations with the students and teachers. At one stage, the students beat the journalists who alleged that they were beaten at the instigation of Prof Bhattacharjee.
They said Jahedul and Tarequl went to the faculty after being informed that first year students were harassed there in the name of interviewing.
Prof Bhattacharjee told The Daily Star that the event was an internal matter of the faculty and the journalists tried to interfere in it.
"I repeatedly asked them [journalists] to leave the place saying it is our internal matter. But they did not listen to me,” he said, adding that they misbehaved with him.
After the incident, leaders of Dhaka University Journalists' Association submitted a memorandum to Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique demanding punishment to students and teacher responsible for the incident.
On the other hand, the students also staged demonstration on the campus and urged the VC for punishment to journalists.
Meanwhile, fine arts faculty authorities, in a statement, said some teachers requested the journalists concerned to leave the faculty but they did not do so and harassed them.
The statement said a conspiracy is going on against the faculty over a trifling matter.
Prof Arefin told the reporters that the matter would be discussed in tonight's (last night) syndicate meeting and action would be taken as per the decision of the meeting.
