'Use IT to enhance math skills'
The two-day National Mathematics Festival and 7th Bangladesh Math Olympiad began in the city yesterday.
Speakers at the inaugural ceremony called for using information technology to upgrade math skills of students at school and college levels.
The objective of the festival is to popularise maths among the students, they added.
Thousands of students, teachers and guardians took part at the inauguration ceremony amid a festive mood at St Joseph Higher Secondary School.
As many as 894 school students from 14-math divisional cities are taking part in the festival in four categories namely Primary (Class III-V), Junior (VI-VIII), Secondary (IX-X-SSC) and Higher Secondary (XI-XII-HSC).
On the first day, the math talents participated in different programmes which included math test, friendship session, question-answer session, and search session for local history and pride.
The best performers of the festival will get the chance to take part in 50th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) in Germany.
Bangladesh Math Olympiad Committee has organised the festival in collaboration with the Dutch Bangla Bank and the Prothom Alo.
The math talents searching programme has been divided into 14 math-divisions.
These are Dhaka, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Bogra, Jessore, Khulna, Barisal, Faridpur, Tangail, Comilla, Noakhali, Chittagong, Rangamati Hill Tracts and Sylhet.
From each Math-Divisional Festival, 60 winners were selected for two-day-long National Mathematics Festival and 7th Bangladesh Math Olympiad.
St Joseph Higher Secondary School Headmaster Brother Leo Pereira inaugurated the math festival hoisting the national flag.
Bangladesh Math Olympiad Committee President and Brac University Vice-chancellor Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury hoisted Math Olympiad Flag and released balloons.
Prof Mohammad Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University Science and Technology, Dutch Bangla Bank Director M Yasin Ali, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, Prof Mohammad Kaikobad of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Prothom Alo Joint Editor Abdul Qayum and Bangladesh Math Olympiad Committee General Secretary Munir Hasan were also present.
