30 hurt as students, locals clash in Sylhet

Around 30 people sustained injuries in a clash between the students of a private university and locals in the metropolitan city yesterday.
A number of rooms, including the computer lab and library, at Sylhet International University and around 10 shops were vandalised near the campus.
Of the injured, five people were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The campus has been closed until tomorrow and the dormitory was vacated. None of the university officials could be contacted despite repeated attempts over a cellphone.
However, contingents of police and Rab were deployed on the spot and the shops remained closed as an uneasy calm is now prevailing in the area.
The incident ensued at around 1:30pm as some shop owners asked some students to remain cool as they were using abusive words during their chats near the university gate in Baghbari area.
The agitating students soon went on a rampage and set fire to some shops following the altercation with the owners.
Over 200 locals and shop owners also came up to protest the incident and locked in a clash with the students for around one hour and a half.
They vandalised the computer lab and library on the campus. Both the groups used bamboo sticks, brick bits and stones during the clash.
Firefighters took action immediately to stop the blaze spreading.
