Stocks in freefall
Dhaka stocks started the week with a sharp fall yesterday, triggered by a bear-run in bank and power shares.
Investors harvested profit from sales of shares in the power and banking sectors, which gained in the past few trading days, analysts said.
The benchmark index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSE General Index, fell 33.68 points, or 1.22 percent, to 2,726.98 points. The DSE All Share Price Index also declined by 26.38 points, or 1.15 percent, to 2,253.11 points.
Most securities traded down on the DSE. Of the 237 traded issues, 66 advanced, 166 declined and five remained unchanged.
The market started with a gain of about 10 points. The gain was pared down to nothing in about 30 minutes into trade.
In the next 45 minutes or so, the market regained the whole loss. After that spell, the market started a long and continuous fall in indices and lost nearly 50 points in 120 minutes.
For the rest of the day, the market remained relatively stable and DGEN did not move much.
A total of 3,18,54,826 shares worth Tk 316.48 crore changed hands on the premier bourse.
Shinepukur Ceramics finished up as the turnover leader on the DSE with 33,77,400 traded shares worth Tk 35.55 crore. The other turnover leaders were Summit Power, Beximco Pharma, Beximco, Titas Gas, AIMS 1st Mutual Fund, Keya Cosmetics, Grameen Mutual Fund One: Scheme Two, Grameen Mutual Fund One and Summit Alliance Port.
Chittagong stocks also recorded a fall. The CSE Selective Categories Index dropped 62.16 points, or 1.11 percent, to 5,490.14 points. The CSE All Share Price Index fell by 83.58 points, or 0.98 percent, to 8,425.18 points.
A total of 64,68,848 shares worth Tk 47.99 crore changed hands on the Chittagong Stock Exchange. Of the 133 traded scrips on the port city bourse, 36 advanced, 91 declined and six remained unchanged.
Shinepukur Ceramics topped the turnover leaders on the CSE with 5,97,300 traded shares worth Tk 6.37 crore. The other turnover leaders were Beximco Pharma, Beximco, AIMS 1st Mutual Fund, Titas Gas, Grameen Mutual Fund One: Scheme Two, Summit Power, Grameen Mutual Fund One, ACI Formulations and Bextex.
