RU controversial staffs continue strike
Academic and administrative activities of Rajshahi University came to a halt yesterday as controversially appointed fourth-class employees at the university continue their indefinite strike demanding regularisation of their jobs.
Earlier, about 200 fourth-class employees of the university enforced an indefinite strike on the campus from Saturday on the demand.
No classes and examinations were held yesterday and administrative activities came to a halt due to the strike.
The RU authorities held an emergency meeting of academic committee with RU Vice Chancellor Prof Mamnunul Keramat in the chair yesterday morning. The meeting decided to postpone all scheduled classes, examinations and viva voce of the first year admission test till December 31.
The agitating employees with many outsiders locked the RU main gate early morning and laid siege to the administrative building.
They also went to different faulty buildings, deans' offices, transport office and kept them under lock in presence of police.
RU syndicate member Prof Abdus Sobhan strongly criticised the university authorities for postponing classes and examinations. He demanded immediate resignation of the RU acting vice chancellor for failing to control the unruly employees.
The employees also announced they would continue the strike until their jobs are not confirmed.
Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Pragotishil Chhatra Jote and many political and cultural organisations called upon the university authorities to reopen the campus immediately.
