Lush green architecture

Designs by Rafiq Azam

Rafiq Azam's designs stand out for their use of green, light and shade.

Lush greenery, water, light and shade are hallmarks of Rafiq Azam's architectural designs. Azam has earned a reputation as one of the most creative architects of Bangladesh. After graduating from BUET, he has designed several private houses, apartments, medical complexes, community centres and shopping/commercial centres. The allure of green and its unparalleled splendour creates a dynamic view in his works.
Rafiq Azam's architectural exhibition is now on at Bengal Gallery where photographs, drawings, video and models of his projects are on display. Azam's projects are scenic, open and eye-catching. His love of nature is interpreted with his frequent use of green in the midst of urban structures that desperately need it.
Bangladesh is a land of rivers and the six seasons, each, create individual ambiences. Water is part and parcel of our daily life, and its existence nourishes our body and soul. The use of water, sometimes flowing, sometimes still, is another feature in Azam's projects. When one closely observes Azam's architectural works in the photographs, one perceives a riverine and emerald green vision. When light and shade harmonically reflect on water in his projects, it seems like a piece of ecstasy and delight. His space brings to the viewer a silent joy and contemplative ambience.
Azam's emphasis on space, form and composition, has established a personal hallmark. He blends the traditional with avant-garde. This explains why his works are easily recognisable.
In recent years, Rafiq Azam has held a prestigious position and some of his architectural designs have been executed in Malaysia, Chennai and other parts of the world.
The exhibition at Bengal Gallery ends on December 26.
