Tax evasion case against Chittagong mayor stayed

The High Court (HC) yesterday stayed for three weeks the proceedings against Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury in a tax evasion case filed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Upon a writ petition filed by Mohiuddin, an HC bench comprising Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Mamnoon Rahman passed the order.
Earlier on August 14, another HC bench of Justice Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Mashuque Hosain Ahmed granted ad-interim bail for three months to the CCC mayor in this case and issued a rule upon the government to explain why the initiation and continuation of the proceedings should not be declared illegal.
The NBR filed the case with the court of Divisional Special Judge in Chittagong against Mohiuddin on charge of concealing information in tax returns during 2004-2005 and 2006-2007 years through filing affidavit and evading taxes over Tk 27 lakh.
