SUST bans students' demo on campus
The syndicate of Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST) has slapped a ban on demonstrations on the university campus until December 4.
The decision was made at an emergency syndicate meeting on Monday night with SUST Vice Chancellor Prof Aminul Islam in the chair.
Expressing deep concern over the recent student unrest on the campus, the syndicate slapped a ban on processions, rallies, sit-in, human chain and transport strikes until 4 December.
Stern actions will be taken if anyone violates the conditions, said the SUST Proctor Dr Golam Ali Haider Chowdhury.
Meanwhile, student organisations Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Islami Chhatra Shibir have expressed resentment over the syndicate decision.
The authorities seek to hold the admission tests for first year honours courses scheduled for November 29 and 30 without any trouble and run the academic activities smoothly during the period, said the SUST Registrar Zamil Ahmed Chowdhury.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Syed Toufique Uddin Ahmed told the Daily Star that the SUST syndicate made the decision to avert all types of untoward incidents on the campus and hold the examinations in a congenial atmosphere.
Additional policemen had already been deployed on the university campus, he added.
The council of BCL's SUST unit scheduled for October 27 had to be postponed following clashes between its factions last week.
SUST BCL Organising Secretary Mostafizur Rahman Raju was injured in a clash between BCL factions on Sunday afternoon.
Before the Eid and Puja vacations, BCL staged demonstrations and laid siege to the VC office protesting the appointment of hall provosts and deans.
