Politics should be centred on parliament

Says Mojahid

Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid yesterday said the politics should be parliament-centred.
"Jamaat did not support any hartal or siege programme in the past. Even if Jamaat is in opposition, it will not support such programmes that destroy the country's economy," he told this at a press conference at the party office.
Jamaat organised the press conference to commemorate the death of five party activists at Paltan in the city on October 28, 2006 who were beaten to death on the street in front of hundreds of people.
Mojahid viewed that political opponents or competitors must not be treated as enemy. Logic, ideology and constructive programmes should be applied to defeat the opponents and not by muscle power, he said.
The government should be changed through constitutional means and not by whipping up violence, he added.
Asked if Jamaat will take part in the election under emergency, he said it would be decided after discussing with the four-party alliance.
Jamaat announced a series of programmes demanding exemplary punishment to those responsible for the killing of their workers two years ago.
The six-day programme beginning today included protests across the country, discussions and milad mahfil.
