Magura politicians demand probe into wealth of 2 BNP leaders
Leaders of different political parties have demanded probe into assets of Magura Sadar upazila BNP ogrganising secretary ANM Shahed Hasan Tagar and district BNP' former publicity secretary Mizanur Rahman alias Hannan.
Tagar is a former president of Magura Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Hannan was PA (personal assistant) to former BNP lawmaker Quazi Salimul Huq of Magura-2 constituency.
The leaders have also demanded probe into allegations of corruption and irregularities done by them in last five years.
The demands were raised by several front ranking leaders of Awami League (AL), Jatio Party (Ershad) and JSD (Inu) while talking to this correspondent.
Mizanur Rahman is on the run after Tagar was arrested in a murder case in February this year.
“Tagar and Mizan come of poor families but amassed wealth in Magura town with blessings of the then lawmaker Quazi Salimul Huq”, joint secretary of Magura district Jatiyo Party (JP) Khan Rabiul Huq said.
Complaints have also been lodged with Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) against Mizan and Tagar for their alleged involvement in corruption and amassing wealth, sources said.
“We have received allegations regarding Tagar and Mizan's alleged involvement in corruption and those have been sent to higher authorities for directive”, ACC Deputy Director Abdul Gaffar said when contacted over cell phone.
“During the 4-party alliance rule, Tagar and Mijan, blessed by Quazi Salimul Huq, played a key role in the controversial tender manipulation syndicate styled 'negotiation committee”, Magura Sadar upazila JP president Mustafizur Rahman said.
“By controlling tenders in every government department, they amassed huge wealth and both built palatial buildings on prime lands in the heart of the town”, he said.
As their earnings are beyond known source of income, ACC should probe into their wealth, Mustafiz said.
A front ranking Awami League leader in the district seeking anonymity said, it is an open secret that during 4-party alliance rule they illegally earned huge amounts of money through tender manipulation and other illegal means. Their alleged corruption must be probed, he demanded.
Sources in intelligence agencies also said, using the unbridled power of the former lawmaker, during the 4-party alliance rule, Tagar and Mizan allegedly amassed vast property including lands and huge amount of money by tender manipulation and other illegal means.
The party in power came as a magic lamp for them. During alliance rule, Mizan built a palatial three-storied building at a cost of about Tk 70 lakh at Mokhlesur Rahman Road in Magura town. Tagar built a two storied building at Hospitalpara in the town involving over Tk 60 lakh, sources said.
Mizan has bought lands worth about Tk 20 lakh, according to sources at land records office.
Talking to this correspondent, Magura district JSD joint secretary Abul Kalam Azad also demanded probe into assets of the two BNP leaders.
He also demanded probe into their bank accounts. Sources claimed that Tagar has accounts with Islami, Uttara and Pubali banks and Mijan has accounts with Janata and Pubali banks in Magura said.
If law enforcers check their bank accounts they will be able to detect transactions in terms of crores of Taka, a former top ranking leader of district BNP said seeking anonymity.
