Workers of two Khulna jute mills continue sit-in for pay
The laid-off workers of Alim Jute Mills and Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills continued their sit-in demanding payment of their arrear wages and other dues.
A tense situation has been prevailing in the Khulna industrial belt since they had started the sit-in programme on September 22.
Alim Jute Mills laid-off workers last September while 215 workers of Carpet Baking Cloth (CBC) section of Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills were laid off on September 25, as the factories faced severe financial crisis.
The Publicity Secretary of Khulna Regional Committee of Patkal Sangram Parishad (PSP) Abdur Rahman said workers of the two mills made a fresh commitment yesterday to launch a joint movement demanding not only their dues but also reopening of the factories.
The PSP leader said the workers of Peoples Jute Mills Ltd must be paid their gratuities in full before Eid.
He claimed the words of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) chairman were inconsistent with his deeds, so far as payment of arrear wages and other dues are concerned. He said the chairman makes commitments of paying in Khulna but forgets all about it when in Dhaka. He claimed the BJMC chairman was buying time to finally shut down Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills.
