Five to die for killing woman

Rajshahi divisional speedy trial tribunal yesterday sentenced five people to death in Merina murder case.
The convicts are Shamsher Ali, husband of Merina Begum, Afsar, Ashraful, Shafiqul and Nasir. Of them, Nasir has remained at large.
The convicts were also fined Tk 10,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Shamsher Ali often tortured his wife Merina for a dowry of Tk 20,000 after their marriage.
On December 24 in 2003, Shamsher took his wife out to visit a relative. The next morning, Merina's body was found at Rehairchar in Chapainawabganj.
Police quoting medical experts said Merina was slaughtered to death.
Shamsher finally confessed to Merina's relatives that he along with his accomplices killed his wife.
After the confession, Merina's brother Tajemul lodged a case with Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station.
