Sevilla lose again
Two-time UEFA Cup winners Sevilla extended their losing streak to three matches on Tuesday with a 3-2 loss at home to Espanyol.
Espanyol midfielder Angel Cervera opened the scoring just before the half hour with a shot from outside of the area that Sevilla keeper Andres Palop was not able to stop.
Albert Riera set off on a run down the left before feeding former Liverpool forward Luis Garcia who fired in the second goal for the Barcelona-based side on the 54th minute.
A cross from Navas from the right on the hour was deflected into his own net by Jarque to put Sevilla back in the hunt.
Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone, who joined Sevilla in August from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, equalized eight minutes later with a header.
Tamudo scored the winner in the dying minutes of the match following a pass from the area from Angel.
Sevilla had a goal disallowed after 21 minutes by referee Mejuto Gonzalez who ruled offside a strike by Russian forward Alexander Kerzhakov after Daniel Alves had sent over a cross.
"We had several chances to put ourselves ahead, we were determined to get a third goal but Espanyol got it right and has taken the points. Football is like that," said Sevilla coach Juande Ramos.
Espanyol now has seven points from five matches, three points behind defending champions Real Madrid who have played a game less.
The last time the two sides faced off was during last year's UEFA Cup final in Glasgow when Sevilla defended their crown in a penalty shoot-out after the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
"We had the luck tonight which we didn't have in Glasgow," said Espanyol coach Ernesto Valverde.
Sevilla headed into the match needing a much-needed morale boost having lost their two previous games to Arsenal and Barcelona.
The club suffered a 2-1 loss against Barcelona on Saturday and were defeated 3-0 by English side Arsenal in the Champions League on September 19.
Barcelona meanwhile will be without their Brazilian star Ronaldinho, who continues to recover from a calf muscle problem that kept him out of Saturday's match, when the Catalan side face Zaragoza on Wednesday.
Ronaldinho has been under fire lately for his lack of form and reported nights out on the town and earlier on Tuesday sports daily Marca wrote that Barcelona had issued an ultimatum to the player to change his ways or leave.
Real Madrid, held to a 1-1 draw away to Valladoid on Sunday after winning their first three league matches, will be looking to extend their lead when they face bottom of the table Real Betis at home on Thursday.
The defending champions will be without defenders Pepe and Christoph Metzelder due to injury but Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder is expected to return after being rested at the weekend.
