America win, Colo Colo stay alive
Uruguayan Rodrigo Lopez scored twice in two minutes as America thrashed fellow Mexican team Pachuca 4-1 Tuesday in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana second round match up.
In Tuesday's other first leg match, Eduardo Rubio scored a valuable away goal to earn Colo Colo of Chile a 1-1 draw with Colombia's Millonarios.
Lopez's goals came in the 56th and 57th minute. Argentine
Federico Insua scored in the 33rd and Paraguayan Salvador Cabanas found the net a minute into the second half scored for the Eagles, who can move on to the quarterfinals even with a loss in next week's second leg match played Wednesday at Azteca Stadium.
"We needed this, we were not playing well, but we did the job," Cabanas said. "America are going do great things."
Christian Gimenez, in the 54th, scored for Los Tuzos, who have not lost against America at home since October 20th of 2000.
Rubio drove a rising shot past goalkeeper Jose Fernando Cuadrado in the 28th minute as Colo Colo held on for a draw with Millonarios at Bogota, Colombia.
Ricardo Ciciliano misfired a penalty shot to equalise for Millonarios two minutes later, but redeemed himself in the second half with a well timed, left-footed crossing shot between two defenders to tie the match in the 67th minute.
The two teams face each other again next Thursday in Santiago, with the winner of the series advancing to the quarterfinals to face either Argentina's Boca Juniors or Sao Paulo of Brazil.
Colo Colo's away goal, worth double in the event of an aggregate tie, means the Colombian side must score at least once in Santiago to keep its hopes of advancing in the South American club tournament alive.
