2 killed in police 'encounter' in Jhenidah

Two criminals were killed in separate incidents of encounter with police in Jhenidah on Wednesday night and early hours of Thursday.
They are Siraz, 28, of Paglakanai village of the town, and Montu, 30, of Ashwasthali village under Jhenidah Sadar.
Acting on a tip, police cordoned off the premises of Water Development Board in the town to arrest criminals when the latter opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, Officer-In-Charge Kazi Wased Ali of Jhenidah Sadar Police Station said.
Caught in crossfire, Siraz died while his cohorts managed to flee.
Police recovered an LG and four bullets from the spot. Siraz is accused in four cases including two for murder.
In the other incident, Montu was killed in an encounter at Ganna Ekra field early Thursday, Officer-in-Charge Furkan Sikdar of the police station said.
The criminals opened fire at police, prompting them to retaliate. During the 30-minute shootout that followed, Montu died in the encounter while his cohorts managed to flee.
Constables Ezabul Islam and Abul Hossain, who received injuries during the incident, are undergoing treatment at Kotchandpur Hospital, police said.
Police recovered a pipe gun and four bullets from the spot. Montu is an accused in five cases including three for murders.
