Manjurul Imam Murder

Tribunal to deliver verdict on Sep1

Judge Abdus Salam Shikder of Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal will deliver judgement in Awami League (AL) leader Advocate Manjurul Imam murder case on September 1.
Advocate Imam, president of Khulna city AL, was bombed to death near his residence at Shamsur Rahman Road under Sadar upazila on August 25, 2003.
Advocate Bijon Behari Mandol, who was accompanying the AL leader, and driver Saidul Islam of the rickshaw that was taking them to a court, also succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
Abdullah Harun Jami, youngest son of Advocate Imam, lodged an FIR with Khulna Sadar Police Station on August 28 of the same year naming none as accused.
Shajahan Howlader, DB inspector of KMP, pressed the charge sheet on March 11, 2004 naming four extremists as accused.
They were Shukur Gazi, Ganesh Banerjee, Ripon and Imam Sarder. The latter was killed in a crossfire in 2005.
The court, however, ordered for further investigation following an appeal made by the prosecution lawyer.
Akram Hossain, DB inspector of KMP, pressed supplementary charge sheet on February 24 this year including the name of one more extremist Shahadat as accused.
The third charge sheet was submitted to the court by Investigation Officer Chittya Ranjan Pal on June 12 this year.
The case was put on trial after three phases of investigation.
The court ordered for reinvestigation of the case as Abdullah Harun Rumi, eldest son of slain AL leader, named five top local leaders of the party as planners for the murder of his father.
He disclosed their names while giving deposition as a prosecution witness in the court in February this year.
