Hundreds of people from all walks of life yesterday paid their last respects to Abdullah Al Mamun, noted playwright, actor and filmmaker.
He was laid to eternal rest beside the grave of his wife Farida Mamun at Banani graveyard in the city at 3:30pm.
Earlier in the morning, his body was taken from Birdem mortuary to the Central Shaheed Minar where his colleagues, cultural activists, fans and students paid their last tribute to the drama prodigy.
From there his coffin was taken to Dhaka University Central Mosque where his namaz-e-janaza was held after Juma prayers.
Mamun breathed his last at around 11:30am on Thursday at the city's Birdem Hospital at the age of 65, leaving three daughters, a son and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.
"Apart from theatre, Mamun had remarkable contribution as a director and actor in radio, TV and cinema. The nation has lost a talent in his death," said Ramendu Majumdar recalling his contribution to developing neo-theatre movement which got momentum just after the independence of the country in 1971.
The legendary playwright was honoured with many prestigious awards including the Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Literature Award, Alakta Sahitya Purashkar and Tarokalok Padak.
