Tangail PDB axing old trees illegally
The Tangail Power Development Board yesterday started felling 13 old trees on its office without permission from authorities.
Tangail PDB (distribution) recently sold six Akashmoni and seven shishu trees, about 20 to 25 years old, to a CBA leader of the department at Tk 55,000 without floating any tender, PDB sources said, adding that present market prices of the valuable trees would be much higher.
During a visit to the spot yesterday, this correspondent saw that five of the 13 trees had already been axed.
When contacted, Tangail PDB executive engineer Nabi Hossain said they sold the trees as per decision of a local committee comprising officials of the department.
The trees were sold after appraising its market prices, he said, adding that the money will be spent to develop the mosque of the department.
Shah-e-Alam, divisional forest officer in Tangail, said if any department wants to fell trees, they have to take permission from the district or upazila forest committee.
