Ershad launches UZ polls campaign
Launching campaign for Jatiya Party (JP) candidates for upazila parishad elections, JP Chairman HM Ershad yesterday said now there is no bar for candidates to using their party affiliations following a recent High Court ruling.
The former president began his upazila-election campaign from Rangpur's sadar upazila.
Restating that his party is part of the Awami League-led grand alliance, Ershad said the JP will take part in the general elections as part of the coalition.
He, however, said the Awami League and other alliance partners must agree with the JP on "some conditions."
Hailing the government for reviving the upazila parishad system that is "essential to grass-roots development", he said the JP knows well the benefits of decentralisation as it introduced the system.
Ershad introduced Rangpur district unit JP secretary Mostafazur Rahman as his party's candidate for sadar upazila parishad chairman.
He also introduced himself as an MP candidate from Rangpur 3 constituency and his nephew Asif Shahariar from Rangpur 1 constituency in the next general election.
