Assault of freedom fighter by Jamaat-Shibir triggers protests
Assault of freedom fighter Sheikh Mohammad Ali by Jamaat-Shibir activists at a gathering of a Jamaat-backed so-called freedom fighter's organisation in Dhaka on Friday triggered protests by freedom fighters, professionals and students in different districts yesterday.
Teachers and students of Rajshahi University protested the incident by staging demonstrations, condemned the so-called organization and demanded punishment of war criminals.
Muktijoddha Mancha and Muitijodha Pathagar in Rajshahi in separate statements also condemned the attack.
In Dinajpur, freedom fighters formed a human chain demanding punishment of war criminals.
At Rajshahi University, several hundred teachers and students under the banner of Muktijoddhar Santan (sons and daughters of freedom fighters) yesterday staged a big rally in front of the Central Library protesting the attack, reports our RU Correspondent.
Earlier, they brought out a protest procession on the campus covering their faces with black ribbons. They formed a human chain, paraded the campus and held a rally, participated by RU teachers, students, officials and activists of different student organisations.
Speakers at the rally strongly condemned the assault on freedom fighter Sheikh Mohammad Ali and demanded punishment of leaders of the so-called Jatiya Muktijoddha Parishad leaders for their derogatory comments about the principles of Liberation War.
They called upon the government to initiate trial of war criminals immediately and ban Jamaat-Shibir politics.
Freedom fighter Prof Moloy Kumar Bhowmik said the freedom fighters who joined the so-called organisation backed by anti-liberation Jamaat are enemies of the country.
He urged freedom fighters to unite to resist 'war criminals'.
Convener of Muktijoddhar Santan Zinna-Al-Mamun urged all progressive students organisations to unite and launch a fresh movement against anti-liberation forces.
RU teacher Prof Shamsuddin Ilas and members of the organisation Masud Rana Mintu and Rodowan Ahmed addressed the rally, among others.
Earlier, the Progressive Teachers Alliance (PTA) and RU units of Chhatra League, Progotishil Chhatra Jote (PCJ), Chhatra Union (BCU) and Bangabandhu Parisahd also brought out processions protesting the assault on the freedom fighter.
They urged demanded punishment of Jamaat-Shibir cadres and security of assaulted freedom fighter Sheikh Mohammad Ali.
Muktijoddha Mancho and Muitijodha Pathagar in Rajshahi in separate statements strongly condemned the assault on the freedom fighter.
They said Jamaat formed the so-called Jatiya Muktijoddha Parishad to harass genuine freedom fighters.
They demanded immediate ban of Jatiya Muktijoddha Parishad punish those who assaulted freedom fighter Sheikh Mohammad Ali Aman.
They also demanded trial of war criminals.
Freedom fighters are the gratest sons of the soil they said and urged the government to ensure their dignity and security.
