Emergency must go before national polls
The grass-roots level leaders of Tangail district unit of Awami League (AL) yesterday said the state of emergency must be lifted before the national election to make it credible.
At an extension meeting held at Tangail Club auditorium in the town, they urged the caretaker government to immediately lift the state of emergency and conditions on indoor politics and hold the general election by October.
Demanding permanent release of party chief Sheikh Hasina, they said, “No election would be acceptable without participation of Sheikh Hasina. We want immediate withdrawal of cases against Sheikh Hasina and other leaders and activists of the party.
Welcoming the central committee decision to take part in the local government election, the grass-roots level leaders urged the party high command to evaluate the honest and dedicated leaders in the upcoming elections.
Several upazila level leaders expressed their dissatisfaction about the central leaders apathy towards the general workers of the party.
Presidents and general secretaries of 12 upazila units of the district addressed the meeting presided over by Tangail District AL President Shamsur Rahman Khan Shajahan.
Among others, AL central Organising Secretary Sultan Mohammad Mansoor, Sports Secretary Dewan Arefin Tutul, former lawmaker Ekabbar Hossain, Tangail district AL General Secretary Fazlur Rahman Faruque and former general secretary of BCL Ajoy Kor Khokon spoke.
