Euro 2008 Briefs
Euro 2008 briefs on Friday:
MOTIVATION
TENERO: Germany coach Joachim Loew used a secret weapon to spur his team on ahead of Wednesday's semifinal against Turkey: the ever-reliable 12th man. In a creative move, "Jogi" played a three-minute film for his players, showing scenes of jubilation around Germany after their quarterfinal win again Portugal. And it apparently worked: the Mannschaft defeated the Turks 3-2. As a special thank you to their loyal fans, the German team plan to travel to Berlin on Monday, no matter who wins the final.
OUT OF THE LIMELIGHT
VIENNA: Talk about a bad week. Former Austria coach Josef Hickersberger not only saw his team eliminated from Euro 2008 in the group stages, he also received a 50-euro fine a few days later after he was caught speaking on his mobile phone while driving... only shortly after he had announced his resignation as team chief.
PARTY ON
BERN: Although no longer hosting a match, Euro 2008 host city Bern is still keen to keep the party going. On the last weekend of the tournament, the Swiss capital will hold several free concerts on the square in front of the Federal Palace. Between 50,000 and 100,000 are expected to attend.
FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE
VIENNA: Russian fans in town for their country's semifinal against Spain on Thursday did much more than just go to the stadium. A major silverware shop in central Vienna saw such an onslaught of clients that it almost ran out of stock. "We were out of caviar sets the whole day," a sales assistant told Austrian television.
