Student kills himself after shooting aunt
A BBA student committed suicide on the terrace of his uncle's house after shooting his aunt in city's Mirpur area at noon yesterday.
The body of deceased Mohammad Jewel, a 28-year old student of Mirpur Commerce College, was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue while his injured aunt Sumi Begum, 30, was admitted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, Dhaka (NITOR) at Sher-eBangla-Nagar.
Mirpur police said they recovered Jewel's body from the terrace of the six-storey building at Mirpur Section 2 at about 2:00pm. Local people took Sumi Begum to hospital.
Police also seized the pistol used in the suicide, which belonged to Jewel's traffic sergeant uncle, from the house.
Quoting Jewel's traffic sergeant uncle Nasir Uddin, sub-inspector (SI) Mosharraf Hossain of Mirpur police said, “Nasir heard a shot while taking a bath at about 1:15pm. On coming out of the bathroom he found his wife shot in the leg.”
“Nasir and others living in the building then found Jewel's dead body on the terrace,” the SI said adding, “Jewel fired at his aunt while she was offering Zohr prayers. He used his uncle's pistol which was usually kept under a pillow.”
Anwar Hosain, deputy commissioner (DC) of Mirpur zone said, “Jewel had an argument with his paternal uncle and his wife after he asked for money to go abroad which they refused. He may have shot his aunt as she mainly refused to give the money.”
