Death anniversary of Ratan today

Today is the 20th death anniversary of martyred student leader Jamil Akhtar Ratan, who was assassinated by the cadres of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), says a press release.
Ratan, also the former president of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri (BCM), a left-leaning student organisation, was shot and hacked to death on the day in 1988 by ICS cadres on the college campus.
Since then, BCM and other progressive student organisations of the country have been observing the day as 'Anti-Fundamentalism and Communalism Day'.
Jamil became the target of Shibir cadres when he led tough movement against the 'State Religion Bill' brought by the former autocrat President HM Ershad.
BCM will hoist black flag at its central office at 7:00am and leaders and activists will wear black badges and will place wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar at 10:00am to mark the day.
They will also bring out a procession on the Dhaka University campus at 11:00am demanding ban on the politics of 'Jamaat-Shibir' group by forming regulations.
Similar programmes will be observed in Rajshahi as well as across the country.
