Graft suspect Elias Ali made convenor of Sylhet BNP
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain yesterday reconstituted the party's Sylhet district unit with Elias Ali, a corruption suspect on the list of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), as its convener.
Elias, a former lawmaker, has been on the run since the imposition of the state of emergency on January 11, 2007, after being charged with corruption and criminal offences.
The ACC included his name on its list of corruption suspects and asked him to submit his wealth statement to the commission.
Central BNP suspended the activities of the party's Sylhet district unit committee on July 27, 2005, following a dispute between former finance minister Saifur Rahman and Elias Ali.
A press release issued by the party's acting Office Secretary Rizvi Ahmed said Elias Ali had been made the convener of the reconstituted 31-member convening committee.
