Population boom
I would like to extend my heartiest thanks to Mr. Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan for his letter on ”Population problem” published on Monday, May 26, 2008.
This is an issue on which I share the same opinion with anybody who understands the gravity of the problem and gives emphasis on population control in Bangladesh. My thoughts and vision are very much in line with what Mr. Shafiqul Islam has stated--depicting population problem as the root cause of all problems in our country.
Why crime and all sorts of criminal activities are increasing despite the prevailing emergency period and existence of a law enforcing body like Rab? They cut a sorry figure before the activities of the criminals-- inventing every moment new dramatic tricks. We all shout in favour of rehabilitation of the distressed people. We often blame the government. It is true that the government must think about the distressed people. But should we not think over the matter that whatever the government does will appear insufficient very soon as the population explosion knows no bounds? Mr. Shafiqul Islam has rightly pointed out that we are often engaged in dialogue on so many issues and problems and even we cry for the distressed but we never bother about the reality why a huge number of people are in distress, why this population explosion, why law and order situation is deteriorating day by day and criminality is showing an upward trend in society.
