Tangail jailer transferred
The Jail Directorate authorities yesterday transferred Tangail jailer Nazrul Islam to Meherpur jail in punitive measures after complaints were filed against him for assaulting the Tangail Correspondent of The Daily Star on May 24.
The probe committee, led by Tangail Jail Super Mohammad Sagir Miah, formed to investigate the assault is meanwhile also looking into earlier allegations against the same jailer.
These include charges of bribery and job rules violation.
Sources said earlier that jailer Nazrul Islam was suspended once before and two departmental cases were filed against him for his acts.
Earlier on May 26, the authorities suspended two jail guards for the attack on journalist Mirza Shakil.
Jail Super Sagir Miah told The Daily Star yesterday, “Jailer Nazrul has been transferred punitively to Meherpur jail. But the investigation into the attack continues.”
The jail super said that all the allegations against him at present and earlier is being investigated.
Maj Shamsul Haider Siddique, deputy inspector general of prisons (DIG-Prisons), said on Monday, “If the jailer is found guilty in the investigation, stern action will be taken against him.”
On May 24, at the directives of Jailer Nazrul Islam, 10 to 12 jail guards of Tangail jail beat up Mirza Shakil when he went there to gather information on a report on the corruption and irregularities at the jail and of the jail authorities.
