HC bench feels embarrassed to hear Khaleda's petition

A division bench of the High Court (HC) yesterday felt embarrassed to hear a petition filed by BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia for quashing the proceedings against her in Niko graft case.
Lawyers for Khaleda then submitted the petition before another HC bench comprising Justice Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Mashuque Hosain Ahmed for hearing. The bench fixed today for hearing the matter.
The detained former premier filed the petition with the HC on Sunday.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case.
Khaleda's counsels -- Barrister Nowshad Zamir and Barrister Nasiruddin Ahmed Asim -- yesterday placed the petition before the HC bench comprising Justice Sharif Uddin Chaklader and Justice Md Emdadul Haque Azad for hearing, but the bench felt embarrassed to hear it.
On December 9 last year, the ACC filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station against the BNP chairperson and several others on charge of abuse of power in awarding a gas exploration and extraction deal to Canadian company Niko.
On May 5, the ACC pressed charges against Khaleda and 10 others in the case.
Former law minister Moudud Ahmed and former state minister for energy AKM Mosharraf Hossain are among the other charge-sheeted accused.
