Ex-BNP MP, 10 others sued in Satkhira

Another case has been filed with Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate's court against former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib and 10 others for forcibly occupying a water body and looting Tk 4. 17 crore fishes.
Judge Ranu Bilkis Banu of Chief Judicial Magistrate's court ordered the officer-in-charge of Kalaroa police station to investigate the case and submit a report, sources said.
The other accused are the former lawmaker's younger brother Nazibullah, Sabur Ali, Yakub Ali, Ibrahim Hossain, Abu Siddique, Mahidul Islam, Pradeep Biswas, Shachin Biswas, Subhash Chandra Biswas, Samsur Rahman and Azihar Rahman all from Kalaroa upazila.
Satkhira district BNP president Habibul Islam Habib was elected from Satkhira-1 (Tala-Kalaroa) constituency in 2001 election as a candidate of BNP led 4-party alliance.
Habib, who is also a charge-sheeted accused in an extortion case filed by Abu Sayeed, is now on the run to evade arrest, police sources said. Joint forces raided his house at Kalaroa to arrest him on July 4 last year. Habib is also on the list of corruption suspects.
Ashraf Hossain, a member of Khordo Matsajibi Samabaya Samittee (fishermen's association) filed the case against Habib and 10 others on Thursday allegedly for occupying Khordo water body forcibly and looting fishes worth Tk 4.17 crore.
The complainant said members of the Samittee leased the 135 acre Khordo water body from government for two years (1409- 1411 Bangla year) and started fish cultivation in 2001.
He alleged that BNP cadres led by Nazibul Islam, under the protection of Habib, drove away the fishermen and occupied the water body on December 12, 2001 soon after the BNP led alliance assumed power in 2001.
They looted fishes worth Tk 4. 17 crore from their water body, he alleged.
Earlier, two other extortion cases were filed with Kalaroa police station against Habib.
Contacted over cell phone, former lawmaker Habibbul Islam Habib told his correspondent from an undisclosed place that the allegation was false and baseless and motivated.
“A vested group filed the case against me to tarnish my image”, he added.
