SUST students demand punishment to culprit
Students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) yesterday reiterated their demand for punishment to one Mahbubur Rahman Shamim, who kidnapped a female student and tortured her a few days ago.
The general students wore black badges, took out silent procession and staged a token sit-in on the campus. They will continue the agitation programmes until the demand is met, sources said.
Meanwhile, women's dormitory Provost Dr Sabina Islam along with assistant provosts and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists also joined the programme.
Shamim kidnapped his sister-in-law (wife's younger sister), an SUST student, from the campus on April 21. He took her to a house in the city's Upashahar area and tortured her overnight.
Later, the girl took insecticide in an attempt to commit suicide. Mahbub took her to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and managed to flee the spot.
With deterioration in her physical condition, the victim was later shifted to Dhaka city next day. Her younger sister informed the SUST proctor of the matter and appealed for taking measures against the kidnapper.
The SUST authority immediately informed the police and Rab officials of the incident and called for necessary actions.
In the backdrop of students' agitation, the SUST proctor tendered his resignation to the vice chancellor.
