'Bangladesh not technologically sound to face disasters'
Acting Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Prof Dr AFM Yusuf Haider yesterday underscored the need for creating mass awareness about the causes of environmental disasters.
He said this at a roundtable 'Environment and future Bangladesh' organised by Population Science department and assisted by UNFPA at Hotel Sheraton in the city.
Prof Yusuf said, “Temperature of the earth has increased due to the effects of greenhouse gas. The sea level will rise by 20 to 50 inches if this continues.”
“Natural disasters like cyclone, hurricane, floods is a regular phenomenon in Bangladesh but we are not technologically sound to face such calamities,” he added.
President of Bangladesh Economic Association Prof Kazi Kholiquzzaman in his keynote paper said, “If the temperature of the earth increases by one degree centigrade, about 1.2 million people in Asia and 250 million people in Africa will face water crisis. So the international community should work unitedly to keep the temperature of the world in a tolerable level.”
Prof Muzaffer Ahmad, Dr Atiq Rahman, Prof Dr SM Imamul Haq, Prof MM Akash and Dr Nilufa Islam also spoke at the roundtable.
