Ex-MP Lalu gets 10 yrs

A special court yesterday sentenced former BNP lawmaker Helaluzzaman Talukdar Lalu to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for amassing over Tk 1.75 crore worth of wealth illegally and concealing wealth information to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Judge Anowar Hossain of the Special Judge's Court, Bogra also handed down a three-year prison term to his wife Shamsun Nahar Zaman for the same offences.
The court also fined the Lalu couple and ordered to confiscate their wealth.
The couple was fined a total of Tk 11 lakh -- Lalu Tk 10 lakh and his wife Tk 1 lakh. In default of the fines, Lalu will have to serve an additional year while his wife three months behind bars.
The court ordered to confiscate around Tk 1.75 crore worth of wealth belonging to Lalu and around Tk 57 lakh worth of wealth belonging to his wife.
On September 6 last year, Ashish Kumar Kundu, an assistant director of the ACC, filed the case against the couple with Borga Sadar Police Station.
The former BNP lawmaker earlier received a total of seven years' imprisonment in two separate cases. He was handed down five years' imprisonment for setting up a wireless tower illegally at his Sutrapur residence in Bogra while he was sentenced to two years' imprisonment as he was found guilty of misappropriating government relief materials.
