Chinese FM to invite CA to Olympics
Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi arrives in the city today to formally invite Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed to the Beijing Olympics in September.
The two-day of the Chinese minister will seek to shore up support in the wake of the worldwide protest of recent Chinese action in Tibet.
Foreign Secretary Md Touhid Hossain told reporters yesterday that Bangladesh has always supported the One-China policy. He refused to answer questions on China's human rights record and the recent protests on Tibet, terming them China's internal matter.
He however mentioned that the issue of Taiwan might come up in the bilateral discussions.
Touhid said the bilateral discussions would seek to boost the already substantial trade ties between the two nations and strengthen existing political relations.
Bangladesh has a massive trade deficit with China.
Yang will also sign an agreement an exchange of letters to build an Exhibition Centre with Chinese assistance in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
He is currently in Vietnam as part of a four-day tour, that includes a trip to Pakistan after Bangladesh.
