Nassa Group chases $300m garment export target
Nassa Group, one of the largest ready-made garment (RMG) manufacturers and exporters in Bangladesh, has been setting up a string of new factories to fulfill the group's export target of US$300 million in 2008.
Currently, the group is running 38 garment units spread throughout the country, including 5 textile mills with more than 30,000 workers, said Chairman of Nassa Group Nazrul Islam Mazumder yesterday.
“We are investing Tk500 crore this year to set up new production units including a spinning mill with a production capacity of 60 tonnes of yarn per day,” he said.
“In fact, the spinning mill is about to go into operation as all machinery and other things have already been set up,” he said. The new mill will have 110,000 spindles and will be one of the largest in the country.
Mazumder said he imports cotton mainly from USA, China and India to use in his factories.
Mazumder said further investments will be made in the coming years as the group strives to maintain its position as one of the major players in the country's RMG industry.
However he warned of a future bottleneck in production due to the lack of skilled workers, especially as those the country was producing were being tempted abroad.
Market operators said Bangladesh's position in the global RMG market has been strengthening due to the recent currency appreciation of China against the US dollar and political turmoil in Pakistan.
After a weak performance in the middle of last year, the industry has bounced back with exporters reporting a flood of new orders in recent months.
In 2007 exports of the Nassa Group were around at US$225 million up from $210 million in 2006.
The group has its own buying houses in Hong Kong, UK, USA and China, Mazumder said.
The group also operates packing, spinning, weaving, and dyeing units on order to shorten lead time and ensure quality. At present, the monthly production capacity of the group is 3.6 million items.
USA based K-mart, WalMart, GAP, Sears, AMC/Target, JC Penny, Woolrich and Europe based George, ASDA, Primark, Carrefour, Tesco, H&M, C&A, Sainsburry, and Metro are the major buyers of the group.
The main products of the group are men's ladies' and children's shirts, blouses, shorts, pants, Jackets, Jumper, Romper, Overall, Short all and Snow items. Beside, these items the group has also been manufacturing swim shorts, pajama sets, hunting wears and shirts.
It has a separate textile division with having Nassa-Taipei Textile Mills Ltd, Nassa-Taipei Spinners Ltd, Nassa-Taipei Denim Ltd, Nassa Spinning Ltd, Nassa-Spinners Ltd.
