Satkhira rally vows to realise rights of Dalits
It was a different day for the people of Satkhira town yesterday as over 800 people of all classes held a rally vowing to stamp out all forms of racial discrimination from the society.
National NGO CARITAS arranged a discussion on 'Down with racial discrimination' organised at Satkhira Pourasava auditorium marking the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Speakers at the discussion called upon all to launch a mass awareness campaign to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination prevailing in the society for overall development of the country.
They said over 70 per cent of Dalit and Indigenous people are deprived of education and other basic rights while caste-based discrimination still prevails in the country.
CARITAS local Director Michael Biswas presided over the meeting.
Additional Deputy Commissi-oner Delowar Haidar was the chief guest and Reverend Father Lorence Valotti SX of Satkhira Catholic Church was the special guest.
Earlier a colourful procession was brought out in the town.
